Title: Grandmother's Pigeon
Author: Louise Erdrich
Illustrator: Jim LaMarche

In her first book for children, critically acclaimed novelist Louise Erdrich weaves the tale of quirky Grandmother, who unexpectedly sails away from her family, leaving behind warm memories and her room’s few belongings -- including her collection of birds’ nests. One year after Grandmother’s departure, three eggs in one of the nests miraculously begin to hatch and out pops a breed of passenger pigeon long thought to be extinct. Could this phenomenon somehow be connected to Grandmother’s stuffed pigeon whose usual sad countenance ahs been replaced by an unexplained expression of contentment? When too many visiting scientists threaten the three hatchlings’ freedom, Grandmother’s family takes matters into their own hands. Soft, elegant illustrations gracefully explore the essence of the engrossing tale, while adding a mystery all their own.

Louise Erdrich is the author of several highly praised adult novels, as well as the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature finalist The Birchbark House. Grandmother’s Pigeon is her first picture book.

Jim LaMarche has illustrated several books for children, including the award-winning Rainbabies. He lives in Santa Cruz, California.
